BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 19. Even if Net Zero emissions are achieved as a global goal in 2050, a certain role of fossil fuels for energy security in the world will remain, the Deputy Energy Minister and COP29 Chief Executive Officer, Elnur Soltanov said, Trend reports.
He made the statement at the presentation of the Action Plan of Azerbaijan's presidency at the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
“Limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees is one of the goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, we should not forget that the production and transportation of hydrocarbons, although they produce carbon dioxide emissions, play an important role in the world's energy security. The latest forecast of bp energy company, for example, noted that even under the scenario of zero emissions (Net Zero) by 2050, one percent of the world's electricity production will use coal as fuel for power plants,” Soltanov noted.
He suggested that the problem of plastic waste can be solved by reducing the production and use of plastic. This will save natural gas as a transitional fuel.
