Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 23 / Trend H. Valiyev /

Communication operators having high market shares, are not interested in implementing a service on numbers portability (MNP - Mobile Number Portability), Azerbaijani Communications and IT Minister Ali Abbasov said today.

However, such a system will be implemented. According to Abbasov, the introduction of MNP services is considered as in mobile and fixed communications. At present, the Ministry prepared a draft regulatory document to introduce this service.

It was reported that the proposals to introduce a service on portability of telephone numbers in Azerbaijan have been submitted to the Government.

The introduction of MNP service in Azerbaijan will allow users to preserve his/her phone number if the operator is changed. It allows him/her to inform their loved ones and business partners about the change of telephone numbers.

A working group consisting of representatives of operators of fixed and mobile communications operating on Azerbaijan's telecommunication market was created to introduce the service in Azerbaijan.

At present, MNP service was involved in many European countries. The experience shows that the service is being introduced gradually, depending on demand, and this process can last for two to three years.

The introduction of numbers portability can stimulate the development of competition, as operators will be forced to make extra efforts to retain their old users and to render more attractive services to attract new ones.
