Russia’s GLONASS satellite navigation system may be available in Azerbaijan.

Presently, the possibility of equipping Azerbaijan’s transport network with the GLONASS system is being considered, Nuri Guliyev, head of the local representation of the Russian Export Center (REC), told Trend.

“As part of the projects to localize the Russian production in Azerbaijan, projects on assembling car equipment, creating joint ventures in pharmaceutical as well as household chemicals industries in the country’s regions, and possibility of supplying Baku Metro with high-tech Russian simulators for training of subway operators are being considered,” Guliyev said.

GLONASS provides an alternative to Global Positioning System (GPS) and is the second alternative navigational system in operation with global coverage and of comparable precision. Access to civilian signals of GLONASS is provided to Russian and foreign consumers located anywhere in the world on free of charge basis and without restrictions.

The main difference between the GPS and GLONASS is that the GLONASS satellites in their orbital motion do not have a resonance (synchronism) with the rotation of the Earth, which ensures greater stability. Thus, GLONASS does not require additional adjustments during the whole period of activity. However, the service life of GLONASS satellites is shorter than other spacecraft.
