Over thousand people in 76 mountain villages in Georgia have been connected to the Internet as part of a government project to support the development of mountain regions, Trend reports referring to the European Union (EU).

The Pshav-Khevsureti and Gudamakari Community Internet Project is being implemented by the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, with the involvement of the High Mountains Settlement Development Fund, Internet Society (ISOC) and the Georgian Small and Medium Telecommunications Operators Association.

As a result of the project, 496 households in 76 villages of the Pshav-Khevsureti and Gudamakari regions where 1,291 residents leave, will be covered by the Internet.

EU supports digital economy and society in the Eastern partner countries, including Georgia, through its EU4Digital initiative. With the total budget of 11 million euro, it will run from 2019 until 2021, covering Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.

Through the program, the EU supports Eastern Partnership countries by reducing roaming tariffs, developing high-speed broadband to boost economies and expand e-services, harmonizing digital frameworks across society in areas ranging from logistics to health, building cyber security and finally, and developing digital skills.
