AzEduNet talks cybersecurity measures in Azerbaijani educational institutions

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 16

By Sadraddin Aghjayev – Trend;

The most topical security methods and tools are being used to ensure the cybersecurity of the educational network of Azerbaijan, AzEduNet Director Natiq Yahyayev told Trend.

According to Yahyayev, currently, only 353 educational institutions in the country are connected to the optic internet.

"In 2020, we managed to provide 52 schools with optic internet. This is a very expensive and time-consuming process. The ENGINET innovative company once again helped us to provide schools with FO (fiber optic) internet. With their help, we managed to connect 12 schools this year. And in just 5-6 years, ENGINET has provided 73 educational institutions of Azerbaijan with optic internet," he said.

Speaking about the protection of educational institutions from cyber threats, Yahyaev emphasized a number of innovative solutions.

"The systems like ‘Next-Generation Firewall’, ‘IDS / IPS’, ‘Advanced Malware and Threat detection and Prevention’, tools like ‘Next-Generation Endpoint Security’, ‘DNS Security’, ‘Email Security’ and ‘Sandbox’, are used to protect our network. Thanks to the cybersecurity measures taken, over the past 30 days, 16.9 million attempts were detected and blocked, of which 11.3 million were confirmed as cyber attacks," said the AzEduNet director.

"AzEduNet has proposed a unique business model, in which cooperation between the private and public sectors has been established. This business model has been working since 2015," said Yahyayev.

"In 2015, a cooperation protocol was signed between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies. Based on this protocol, a contract was signed between the Ministry of Education and AzEduNet to provide educational institutions with the internet and an intranet through optical communication channels. Within the framework of this document, AzEduNet, as a commercial partner and potential investor, attracted ENGINET," he said.

"ENGINET attracts private financial resources to connect educational institutions to the educational network through optical channels on a free basis and places its own communication equipment in educational institutions. Using this communication equipment, it provides IP television, internet, and IP telephony services for residential and commercial objects around the connected educational institution," the AzEduNet director added.

Thanks to this business model, six schools in Baku, Ganja, and Mingachevir were completely exempt from monthly subscription fees for technical support services, he added.
