Turkmenistan, Iran discuss transport cooperation issues

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, Jan. 10

By Huseyn Hasanov – Trend:

Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov met with Iranian ambassador Abbas Arbab Khales to Turkmenistan, Trend reports referring to the Turkmen Foreign Ministry.

The parties discussed key aspects of cooperation, including the transport and transit sphere, cultural and humanitarian interaction between the border regions of the two countries.

The sides also spoke about the significance of the current year in view of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s neutrality and its role in maintaining peace, stability and economic growth in the region.

The two countries also built the Dostluk (Friendship) border dam and completed the North-South Railway Project, based on a tripartite agreement signed in 2007 with the participation of Turkmenistan, Iran and Kazakhstan.

The Turkmen experts think that strengthening cooperation with Iran can contribute to the expansion of Turkmenistan’s exports to many other countries through the Persian Gulf terminals, as well as through pipeline, railway infrastructure and power lines.

The Iranian side proposed to launch Tehran-Ashgabat and Mashhad-Ashgabat direct flights in May 2018.
