BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 23

By Nargiz Ismayilova – Trend:

The volume of cargo transportation in the Azerbaijani part of the Transport Corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia (TRACECA) exceeded 15.8 million tons from January through April 2020, and cargo turnover in turn reached 3.4 billion ton-kilometers, Trend reports citing the report of the State Statistical Committee.

The volume of cargo transportation increased by 6.3 percent in the reporting period compared to the same period of 2019.

During the first 4 months of 2020, the significant share of the total volume of cargo transportation, that is 62.2 percent, accounted for road transport, which amounted to 9.8 million tons. Thus, the volume of cargo transportation dropped by 10.2 percent over the year.

The share of cargo transportation by rail amounted to 27 percent of all types of transportation. Hereby, the volume of railway freight made up 4.3 million tons, showing an increase of 0.7 percent over the year.

Over the reporting period, maritime cargo shipping accounted for 10.8 percent of the total cargo transportation volume, which stood at 1.7 million tons, having decreased by almost 2.9 percent.

About 18.6 percent or 2.9 million tons of cargo were shipped through TRACECA by transit.

TRACECA is a system of international cargo transportation by road, based on the Customs Convention on the international carriage of goods using TIR.

The TRACECA corridor is involved in gradually developing trends in trade and economic relations. The main cargo flows that pass through the corridor, on the one hand, are formed in Western and Central Europe, and on the other - in Central and Southeast Asia.
