Volume of cargo transited via Azerbaijan along North-South route increases

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug. 19

Around 220,358 tons of cargo in 3,799 wagons were transported in transit via Azerbaijan to the Iran's Astara cargo terminal along the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) from January through July 2020 compared to 160,537 tons of cargo in 2,406 wagons during the same period of 2019, Spokesman for ADY Express LLC Ilham Abdulov told Trend.

During the reporting period, 275,283 tons of goods in 5,348 wagons were transported via the Astara cargo terminal in Iran. Of this volume, 132,736 tons in 2,114 wagons were delivered to Astara city, and 142,547 tons in 3,234 wagons – from Astara, he noted.

“The average daily transshipment of goods through the Astara terminal amounted to 1,529 tons or 30 wagons, showing a 12.3 percent growth over the year. The main types of shipped products are wood and timber, grain, fruits, vegetables, construction materials and more,” said Abdulov.

In the first seven months of last year, 30 percent more cargo was transported via the Astara cargo terminal in Iran compared to the same period last year, the spokesman said.

During the reporting period, Russia and Iran were leading in terms of the volume of cargo transportation along the North-South route, he added.

ADY Express LLC, a subsidiary of the Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, is the operator of the cargo transshipment at the Astara cargo terminal.
