Georgia sees significant decrease in number of visitors

The number of visitors was 94.5 percent down in Georgia in January 2021, Trend reports via the Georgian National Tourism Administration (GNTA).

Some 34,909 foreign citizens visited Georgia last month, the reduction amounts to 598,000.

The major number of tourists (85 percent) visited the country by land after the closure of air borders. At the same time, 30,905 or 91 percent of the visitors were men, while the number of women was 2,860 or 8.5 percent.

Top 15 countries from which Georgia received the most visitors in January:

1 Turkey - 14,500 visitors, decrease of 80.7 percent year-on-year;
2 Georgia (non-resident) - 5,732 visitors, decrease of 88.7 percent year-on-year;
3 Azerbaijan - 3 138 visitors, a decrease of 97.5 percent year-on-year;
4 Russia - 1,916 visitors, decrease of 97.8 percent year-on-year;
5 Uzbekistan - 1,291 visitors, a decrease of 13.7 percent year-on-year;
6 Ukraine - 626 visitors, decrease of 95.1 percent year-on-year;
7 Kazakhstan - 385 visitors, decrease of 91.6 percent year-on-year;
8 Belarus - 310 visitors, decrease of 87.6 percent year-on-year;
9 Tajikistan - 255 visitors, decrease of 47.3 percent year-on-year;
10 France - 226 visitors, a decrease of 85.1 percent year-on-year;
11 Germany - 205 visitors, a decrease of 92.7 percent year-on-year;
12 Bulgaria - 146 visitors, a decrease of 71.1 percent year-on-year;
13 US - 121 visitors, decrease of 95 percent year-on-year;
14 Kyrgyzstan - 118 visitors, a decrease of 80.2 percent year-on-year.

Air traffic resumed in Georgia from February 1, 2021, but a significant increase in visitors’ number is not expected in the country yet.

Georgia received a total of 1.7 million visitors in 2020, the decline amounts to 81 percent year-on-year. The losses from the tourism sector have made up $2.7 billion in 2020.
