Turkmenistan, Russia considering co-op in construction, electrification of railways

BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 26

By Jeila Aliyeva - Trend:

Demirellary of Turkmenistan (Railways) and Russian Railways, as well as Russian Railways International, have discussed cooperation in the construction and electrification of the railway on the route Turkmenabat-Ashgabat-Turkmenbashi, as well as on the route Ashgabat-Dashoguz, Trend reports with reference to Turkmenportal information portal.

The cooperation was discussed during the joint meeting.

The Russian side also expressed its readiness to offer the latest technologies and supplies of the necessary equipment with the possible localization of the production of individual components at the enterprises of Turkmenistan.

As part of the proposal to participate in the planned projects, Russian Railways International offered a comprehensive approach to the construction, modernization, and improvement of the efficiency of the railways of Turkmenistan.

The Turkmen side confirmed its interest in starting cooperation with Russian companies in the implementation of the above-mentioned projects.

In the future, Turkmenistan will provide the Russian side with all the necessary documentation to study the technical side of the projects, as well as a feasibility study of the organization of project financing.

As earlier the Russian Foreign Ministry told Trend, Turkmenistan and Russia are preparing to sign an intergovernmental agreement on the promotion of interregional cooperation, an intergovernmental program of economic cooperation for 2021-2023, an agreement on the exchange of statistical data on mutual trade, and the exchange of documents and information on the customs value of goods transported between Russia and Turkmenistan.

"We hope that Russian-Turkmen cooperation in the above-mentioned areas will continue this year. The next meetings of the intergovernmental Turkmen-Russian Commission on economic cooperation and its high-level group on trade and investment support, scheduled for this year in Moscow, will give the necessary impetus to the implementation of joint projects. The Second Caspian Economic Forum, which is scheduled to be held in Moscow in August, also opens up additional opportunities for cooperation with Turkmenistan."

Despite the difficult epidemiological situation and the associated restrictive measures, relations between Russia and Turkmenistan are developing increasingly.

The parties actively use the video conferencing format to maintain a proper level of interaction on topical issues on the bilateral agenda: online meetings are held regularly between ministries and departments, regions, and business circles.

"In 2020, the co-chairs of the intergovernmental Turkmen-Russian Commission on economic cooperation - Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Alexei Overchuk and Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov met twice in this format with the participation of the heads of relevant ministries and departments of the two countries," the report added.

In the context of the global COVID-19 pandemic, Russia provided Turkmenistan with 690 test systems for determining coronavirus infection for 69,000 studies, and Ashgabat sent goods produced in Turkmenistan for the needs of the Astrakhan region free of charge. Active cooperation has been established on the issue of Russian vaccine supplies to Turkmenistan.
