Germany eyes co-op with Uzbekistan in construction of Mazar-i-Sharif – Kabul – Peshawar railway

Uzbekistan and Germany discussed the possibilities of cooperation in the implementation of the project for the construction of the Mazar-i-Sharif – Kabul – Peshawar railway by involving German experts and consultants in development of design documentation, Trend reports citing the Ministry of Investments and Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan.

The mentioned issue was discussed by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Investments and Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan Sardor Umurzakov and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Uzbekistan Gunter Overfeld.

During the meeting, the sides discussed topical issues of the current agenda of trade, economic and investment cooperation, as well as ways of its further expansion.

The positive trends observed in the economic relations between the two countries, expressed in concrete figures, were noted. Thus, in 2020, the volume of implemented German investments in Uzbekistan increased by 25 percent, exceeding the $700 million mark, and exports to Germany increased by 17 percent.

Moreover, the high interest of the government and business circles of Germany to expand cooperation with Uzbekistan by searching and identifying new promising areas of partnership was emphasized.

It is reported that mechanisms for building up and diversifying the Uzbek-German trade turnover took a special place on the agenda. In the common opinion of the parties, a tangible impetus will be given to this by linking Uzbekistan to the portal of German importers - "Import Promotion Desk", as well as Uzbekistan’s obtaining of beneficiary status in the European Union General System of Preferences GSP + and joining to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The head of the diplomatic mission voiced the commitment of the government of Germany to provide comprehensive support to Uzbekistan in the successful implementation of these initiatives.

In addition, the parties agreed to organize a video conference with the participation of large German textile brands and Uzbek manufacturers to promote domestic products to the German market, as well as building stable cooperation ties.

Furthermore, the issues of financial and technical cooperation were raised - the parties expressed mutual interest in the effective implementation of previously agreed projects, carried out at the expense of attracted grants and loans from the government of Germany.

Also, the German side showed high interest in the project of construction of the Mazar-i-Sharif - Kabul - Peshawar railway. During the dialogue the possibilities of cooperation in this direction were considered, in particular, by attracting German experts and consultants to the development of project documentation.
