Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company (ASCO) CJSC on March 1, 2021 put into operation the newest Ro-Pax type (roll-on/roll-off passenger) ferry ship named ‘Azerbaijan’ with a capacity of up to 100 passengers, 56 wagons or 50 large-sized cargo trucks, the ASCO told Trend.

The ferry is planned to operate for cargo transportation in the direction of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, the company message reads.

“With the help of this ship, the ASCO will carry out the transportation of goods in tank wagons, as well as large wheeled vehicles (TIR)," added the company.

The ASCO also noted that currently the transit transportation of wagons and TIR across the Caspian Sea through Azerbaijan is carried out by ferries and Ro-Ro (Roll-on/roll-off) ships.

The concept and engineering design of the new Ro-Pax ferry, which is considered a unique project first commissioned in the Caspian Sea, was developed by the Odessa Bureau of Marine Engineering with the active participation of ASCO engineers.

"The length of the ship is 154.5 meters, width - 17.7, and height - 7.5 meters. The ferry speed reaches 14 knots," stressed the ASCO message.

Previously, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev took part in the ceremony of putting into operation the first Ro-Pax-type ‘Azerbaijan’ ferry built at the Baku Shipyard LLC by order of Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company CJSC for transporting passengers, cars and railway cars.
