BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 27. The volume of cargo transported through Iranian railways decreased by 7 percent, during the first eight months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through November 21, 2022), compared to the same period last Iranian year, as was reflected in the report of Iranian Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, Trend reports.

In total, 29.7 million tons of cargo were transported by Iran's railway lines in 8 months, while in the same period last Iranian year, the figure stood at 31.8 million tons.

Meanwhile, a total of 47 million tons of cargo were transported through Iranian railway lines in the last Iranian year (March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022).

During 8 months, cargo transit through Iranian railway lines amounted to 939,000 tons, which is a decrease of 24 percent compared to the same period last Iranian year (1.24 million tons).

Cargo transit via Iranian railway lines has decreased mainly due to the decrease in the price of sulfur in the world. So, sulfur transit of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan via Iranian railway lines for 8 months decreased by 65 percent compared to the same period last Iranian year, as well as Russia's sulfur sales to China at a low price has caused a decrease in transit.

In addition, 10.8 million passengers were transported by Iran’s passenger trains in 8 months, which is 60 percent more compared to the same period last Iranian year.

There are currently 978 locomotives, 29,305 freight wagons and 2,153 passenger wagons used for Iran's railway lines.
