Media outlets: Kazakh president operates in Hamburg
Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev underwent a prostate operation at a clinic at the University of Hamburg, German tabloid Bild reported on Wednesday.
The 71-year-old Nazarbayev arrived in the city on July 10 and was operated on by a Dutch specialist at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, CA-News quotes the tabloid as reporting.
It should be recalled that Bild reported on Tuesday that Nazarbayev "secretly" checked himself into the clinic, and at present the clinic is being guarded by heavy security detail.
Contacted by AFP, a hospital spokeswoman declined to comment, saying she could neither confirm nor deny that Nazarbayev was at the clinic. The spokeswoman added however that the clinic has undertaken "no special security measures."
A Kazakh foreign ministry spokesman told AFP that "the president is currently on holiday" but without saying where.
The presidential advisor Yermukhamet Yertysbayev contacted by AFP also declined to comment.
The Bild Hamburg report also said that the German foreign ministry acted as a mediator in determining a clinic for the Kazakh president.
However, the ministry denied this, claiming that it was unaware that Nazarbayev was in Hamburg, AFP reported.
