Kazakh citizen elected to UN Human Rights Committee

Kazakh Citizen Marat Sarsembayev has been elected as member of the United Nations Committee for Human Rights on Jan.17 at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York, the Kazakh Foreign Ministry said. Mr Sarsembayev is a member of the Central Election Commission of Kazakhstan.

'The elections were held by voting in three rounds, during which in the second the Kazakh claimant won by a majority', the report reads.

Mr Sarsembayev has been elected as a member of the Human Rights Committee with a term of office until late 2012 and the right to be re-elected for a new term (2013-2016) in September 2012.

'This step means a recognition of the Kazakh candidate's personal qualities and to a large extent, Kazakhstan's growing prestige on the world stage as a state making an important contribution to strengthening the principles of democracy, rule of law and human rights protection," the report says.

The UN Human Rights Committee is an organisation dealing with the supervision over the fulfilment of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in member countries.
The Human Rights Committee was established in 1977 and consists of 18 members - citizens of the States Parties to the Covenant, who have high moral skills and recognised competence in the area of human rights.
