Dariga Nazarbayeva has been elected as the Speaker of the Senate of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Trend reports.

Ms Nazarbayeva thanked all members of the parliament for the confidence that they made voting unilaterally for her candidature in the post of Speaker of the Senate.

“I deeply realize the role of the parliament in political and public life of the country, in particular in this crucial period of out country," said Ms Nazarbayeva while addressing to the Senate sitting on March 20. “Our Elbasi (leader of the nationa) has set scaly tasks for modernization of the society, strengthening of social support and defense of socially vulnerable strata of the society.

Earlier it was reported that President Kasim Jomart Tokayev nominated the candidature of Dariga Nazarbayeva, elder daugther of former President Nursultan Nazarbayev, to the post of Speaker of the Senate. MPs unilaterally voted for her candidacy.

Today Qasym-Jomart Toqayev has taken the oath of office as Kazakhstan's Acting President. Toqayev will execute the role of the president until the next presidential election.

Earlier on March 19 Vthe First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev stepped down from his post. Nazarbayev has been serving as President of Kazakhstan for 28 years, since the office was created on April 24, 1990.
