Kazakhstan records marginal increase in retail trade

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 12. The retail trade volume reached 6.1 trillion Kazakh tenge ($13.6 billion) from January through May 2023 in Kazakhstan, marking a 9.3 percent increase compared to the same period in 2022, Trend reports.

Retail sales by trading enterprises saw a growth of 12.8 percent, while sales by individual entrepreneurs, including those in markets, increased by 0.1 percent.

Since the beginning of the year, the turnover from retail sales by private enterprises amounted to 5.4 trillion Kazakh tenge or $12 billion (88.5 percent of the total retail trade volume), while foreign-owned enterprises - 699.6 billion Kazakh tenge or$1.5 billion (11.5 percent).

As of June 1, 2023, the volume of commodity stocks held by trading enterprises in the retail trade sector reached 1.5 trillion Kazakh tenge ($3.3 billion), equivalent to 73 days of trade.

Food products accounted for 28.2 percent of the overall retail trade volume, while non-food products made up 71.8 percent. The sales volume of food products decreased by 6.4 percent compared to the same period in 2022, while non-food products witnessed an increase of 17.3 percent.

The cities of Almaty (31.4 percent) and Astana (12.2 percent), along with Karaganda (7.7 percent) and East Kazakhstan (6.3 percent) regions, held the largest share in the total retail trade volume of the country from January through May 2023.
