ASTANA, Kazakhstan, October 6. Kazakhstan kicked off nationwide voting on the construction of a nuclear power plant, Trend reports.
Polling stations will be open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM local time. Results are expected to be announced within seven days. A total of 10,327 polling stations will be available, including 72 located outside of Kazakhstan. Currently, 12,244,683 citizens are eligible to vote.
On September 2, 2024, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced the date for the referendum and signed a decree to proceed with it.
In 2023, the Ministry of Energy revealed that four companies are leading contenders for the construction of the nuclear power plant: China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), South Korea's Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), France's EDF, and Russia's Rosatom.
The project will also involve international organizations, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to ensure additional oversight.
