The protests in Kyrgyzstan's Jeti-Oguz district are a threat to the authorities and the government of the republic, Kyrgyz expert Sergey Masaulov said today.

"This is a direct threat to the government and the power structure," he told Trend over phone. "The authorities must not give in to any kind of provocation."

The residents of Jeti-Oguz district, Issyk-Kul province in Kyrgyzstan gathered for a rally on May 27 demanding the denunciation of the agreement on the Kumtor gold mine and blocked the road leading to it.

The protesters with firebombs have recently entered the territory of the "Tamga" 220 \ 110 \ 24 \ 10 kW substation and cut off the power supply on the mine.

According to the expert, besides the objective reasons behind the rallies in Kyrgyzstan, such as its poor socio-economic situation, the fact that the people did not receive the aid allocated by "Kumtor" and so on, there are also subjective reasons.

"Why has it started now? Masaulov asked. "One can pay attention to the fact that these conversations started long ago - in April."

He added that "Kumtor" is just an excuse to keep the tension and exert the pressure on any government of the country.

"It is indicative that the events started now, after the successful meetings within international integration organizations, in anticipation of the fact that the parliament intends to take actions on denunciation of the agreement on the presence of NATO Transit Center at Manas airport," Masaulov said.

He added that many individuals on-site provoke the authorities to take tough actions which will result in victims.

"If these messages appear, it will be the authorities' fault."

According to Masaulov, the situation is fraught with unpleasant consequences only if new unrests begin.

"At present, there is information that certain concern is observed in Jalal-Abad," he said.

According to the local media, on Friday evening about 600 people gathered in the Jalal-Abad square and seized the regional administration building. But the Interior Ministry denied these reports.
