BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, November 14. A small hydroelectric power station (HPS) with a capacity of 500 kW has been put into operation in Tostu village in Jalal-Abad region of Kyrgyzstan, Trend reports.
The HPS was constructed by a local private entrepreneur, Nurlan Ormonov, and cost $750,000. This HPS will additionally cater to the electricity needs of the residents of Tostu village.
During a meeting with members of the Eastern Committee of the German Economy and representatives from leading German companies, Kyrgyzstan’s President Sadyr Zhaparov mentioned in October that there are 51 small and medium-sized hydropower plants, along with 16 solar and wind power stations of varying capacities, currently under construction in Kyrgyzstan.
Zhaparov highlighted that Kyrgyzstan boasts over 3,500 water sources, including 30 major rivers, accounting for more than 40 percent of the water resources in the entire Central Asian region.
The majority of electricity in Kyrgyzstan (over 80 percent) is generated from hydroelectric resources.
According to the State Statistical Committee of Kyrgyzstan, the country generated 10.384 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity during from January through September 2023, which is a rise by 9 percent compared to the same months in 2022 (8.985 billion kilowatt-hours).
