The prepcom conference will be organized in Dushanbe on Oct.12-19 by the Tajik Government and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) in cooperation with UNWater, UNDP Office in Dushanbe and the South-South News, the 6th World Water Forum (WWF) website reported.
The objective of the Dushanbe conference is to discuss current issues and challenges in water cooperation that will be later included in the concept note and the program of the thematic session on water cooperation in the framework of the Conference Rio+20.
The outcome of the Dushanbe conference will be submitted to the Secretariat of the Conference Rio+20 before Nov.1, 2011.
The main goals of the prepcom conference is to discuss different aspects of strengthening cooperation and dialogue to resolve current water issues, develop concrete recommendation on effective approaches and mechanisms towards joint use of water resources in transboundary basins of rivers, aquifers and lakes, and the draft outcome document of the thematic session within the framework of the RIO+20 Conference, etc.
The UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) will take place in Brazil on 4-6 June 2012 to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), in Rio de Janeiro, and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg.
The Conference is aimed to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development, and address new and emerging challenges.
