BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 27. The Government of Tajikistan plans to significantly increase the production capacity of the country's energy system through the use of renewable energy sources, this was stated in the Renewable Energy Program for 2023-2027, approved by the government decree issued on March 1, 2023, Trend reports via Tajik media.

The program indicates that specialists are currently assessing the resources and potential of hydro, solar, wind, and geothermal energy.

As the preliminary estimates show, the energy potential of these resources (excluding large hydroelectric power plants) amounts to more than 35,754 MW.

In particular, the potential of small rivers for the construction of small hydroelectric power plants is estimated at 32,500 MW, with an ability to generate more than 100 billion kWh per year. The potential of wind energy is estimated at 1,900 MW.

The amount required for the implementation of the program is set at roughly 1.6 billion somoni (about $150 million), with budget allocations of 3.6 million somoni ($329,641). The remaining amount is expected to be received from development partners.

As the program said, some 17 state investment projects worth 16.4 billion somoni ($1.5 billion) are currently being implemented in Tajikistan to solve the problems of the energy sector and improve electricity access for consumers within the country and the region.

It is also emphasized that during the period of independence of Tajikistan, more than 2,000 MW of new generating capacities were put into operation.
