DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, March 17. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) provided humanitarian aid to 432,458 individuals in Tajikistan in February 2024, Trend reports.
According to the WFP, 51 percent of this aid supported men, while 49 percent was directed towards women. The assistance included 814 tons of food and cash-based transfers totaling $59,357.
As part of the WFP's home-grown school feeding initiative, a group of 15 local women in Spitamen district in Sughd region began planting various seeds in their greenhouse, including greens, radish, cucumber, tomato, onion, garlic, broccoli, strawberry, and potato. Another women's group in Bobojon Ghafurov district, also in the Sughd region, received four cattle and fodder to enhance cattle breeding. Additionally, over 30 members of women's production groups were trained in management skills, cattle breeding, and financial literacy.
Furthermore, the WFP's representatives held discussions in February with the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Ismatullo Nasredin, and representatives from the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population of the country.
Moreover, WFP Tajikistan dispatched 1,252 tons of food commodities to Afghanistan during the same month.
WFP has been actively involved in Tajikistan since 1993 and is now operating under the Country Strategic Plan (2023-2026) initiated in January 2023.
This strategic plan outlines specific objectives for the upcoming years, with a focus on improving the livelihoods, resilience, and adaptive capacities of food-insecure and vulnerable populations in both urban and rural areas. The plan places particular emphasis on enhancing climate-resilient and nutrition-sensitive agricultural and food value chains by 2026.
