Turkmenistan appoints representative to OIC

Nazarguly Shaguliev, Turkmenistan’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Saudi Arabia (Riyadh), has been appointed the country’s permanent representative to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), an official Turkmen source said on Saturday.

Nazarguly Shaguliev, Turkmenistan's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Saudi Arabia (Riyadh), has been appointed the country's permanent representative to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), an official Turkmen source said on Saturday.

The relevant decree was signed by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

OIC is the largest Muslim governmental international organization, which consists of 57 countries with a population of 1.2 billion people. The headquarters of the organization is located in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia).

Saudi Kingdom was among the first countries to recognize the independence of Turkmenistan and established diplomatic relations with the Caspian state. In 1997, the Embassy of Saudi Arabia opened in Ashgabat.

Berdimuhamedov's official visit to Saudi Arabia was held in April 2007. The two countries signed a package of bilateral documents - general agreement on bilateral cooperation, an agreement on cooperation between the chambers of commerce of the two countries.

The two countries are exploring possibilities of partnership in the fuel and energy sector, production of cement and other building materials, as well as in agriculture, including animal husbandry, cultivation of grain and forage crops.
