Schlumberger to conduct drilling operations at Turkmenistan’s largest gas field

Turkmengeology State Corporation and Schlumberger Logelco Inc (Panama) will sign a contract for drilling services, the preparation of drilling fluids and the strengthening of well casing at three development wells on Turkmenistan's largest gas field, Galkynysh, an official Turkmen source reported.

The contract is the outcome of an international tender that was followed by an executive order signed by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

The contract accelerates operations at Galkynysh field aimed at production of 30 billion cubic meters of gas. The development of the gas field is undertaken in accordance with the Program for development of the oil and gas industry of Turkmenistan for 2012-2016.

At a recent government meeting, Turkmen President Berdimuhamedov said that further expansion of mutually advantageous cooperation in the energy sector will contribute to the efficient use of the abundant natural resources of the country, solving issues of energy security, which is an important factor for rapid socio-economic development in regional and global scales.

As reported by local media, according to Gaffney, Cline & Associates (UK), Galkynysh is the second largest field in the world at 26.2 trillion cubic meters. According to specialists, the field covers a total area of 1,800 square kilometers.

In 2013, Turkmenistan plans to commission the Galkynysh field and produce 30 billion cubic meters of gas from it. Within the project's first phase of development, production wells will be drilled on the unique gas-bearing area in a rapid mode and modern plants for desulphurization of natural gas and production of high-quality commercial gas will be built.
