Maksatmyrat Atayev has been appointed chairman of the Turkmenpagta (Turkmencotton) state concern. He previously worked as deputy chairman of this agency, according to the published decree of the country's President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

Turkmenpagta is a government body that carries out its activities as a production and economic complex providing development and the formation of the most important areas for Turkmenistan's cotton growing industry. The state concern carries out its activity on the principles of cost accounting and self-financing.

Cotton is grown in five Turkmen provinces: Akhal, Mary, Lebap, Dashoguz and Balkan. The sown area of cotton spans 545,000 hectares. The cotton is sown in April and the harvesting from August to October.

It was recently reported that over 25 per cent of the planned 1,000,050 tons of cotton was procured. According to experts the Turkmenpagta harvest this year turned out to be generous.

Some 159 procurement centres and 36 ginning factories operate continuously.
