Turkmen president calls for openness and transparency during parliamentary elections

By Huseyn Hasanov - Trend: Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov at the last meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers has pointed to the need of openness and transparency while holding the parliamentary elections, scheduled for December 15, the government said today.

"Regarding the upcoming elections of MPs of the fifth convocation, President Berdimuhamedov has pointed to the need for strict control of the entire process of democratic elections, ensuring their openness and transparency," the statement said.

The term of MPs' office is five years. The main current staff was elected in December 2008.

The national observers, invited international experts and observers from many foreign countries and major international organizations, including, the European Union, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) will observe the upcoming elections.

The elections will be held on a two-party basis in accordance with the law on 'Political parties' adopted in 2012. The Turkmen Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs was created on its basis in Ashgabat in August 2012 with the participation of 300 delegates representing business organizations from all regions of the country.

Until that time, the only political organization - the Democratic Party, headed by President Berdimuhamedov was registered in the country.
