Turkmenistan's President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who is on an official visit to Austria, met with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano, the Turkmen government said.

Berdimuhamedov thanked the IAEA Board of Governors for accepting the Turkmen government's bid on membership in this international organization and the recommendation to approve the country's candidacy as an IAEA member at its General Conference, to be held in Vienna in September 2015, the statement said.

Amano stressed the interest of his organization in further strengthening of the established cooperation with Turkmenistan, considered by the IAEA as a reliable and responsible partner, the statement said.

Turkmenistan has been working with the IAEA since 2005, when the Agreement on Safeguards in Connection with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons was signed.

According to this document, Turkmenistan is obligated to provide the international experts with the data on nuclear and ionizing materials and precision equipment on a regular basis once a year.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with its headquarters in Vienna was established in 1957 as an independent intergovernmental organization in the UN system. The objective of the IAEA activity is to develop cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
