IPI calls Uzbekistan authorities to stop pressure on mass media and journalists

International Press Institute (IPI) published the annual review of media freedom. The focus of the document is the situation in Asia, CA-NEWS reported.

"In such countries, as Uzbekistan, State officials fabricate accusations against journalists in order to stop expression of critical opinions," agrees IPI with the evaluation of the situation that was made by organization Article 19.

The section dedicated to Uzbekistan reminded about the arrest of journalist and human rights defender Salimjon Abdurahmanov on the fabricated accusation in 2008.

"At that time government annulled accreditation and conducted pressure on representatives of international mass media, such as: BBC, Deutsche Welle, Radio Liberty, and Russian NTV. The main aim of these actions was to make journalists leave the country," was said in report.

The other limitation for journalists activity is the creation of prohibited items list that was confirmed by the government. In this list there are:Andijan events, President Islam Karimov and his family, opposition activity, and other prohibited issues.

In the end IPI experts advised Uzbekistan government to stop censorship, pressure, and threats to journalists, stop limitations on local and international mass media.
