US State Department representatives study Uzbek citizens' rights and freedoms

The US delegation, led by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labour Jane Zimmerman continues to study the situation in the sphere of human rights in Uzbekistan.

On the eve Zimmerman met with the director of the National Centre for Human Rights of Uzbekistan Akmal Saidov.

The parties agreed that the protection and promotion of human rights in Uzbekistan are identified as one of the priority areas of public policy, and the rights and freedoms as well as the legitimate interests of the person stands at the center of ongoing democratic reforms.

Uzbekistan fully complies with its international obligations in the field of human rights. The country is actively cooperating with the relevant United Nations bodies. Being a member of the International Labor Organization, Uzbekistan has ratified 13 conventions and consistently provides comprehensive measures to ensure their implementation.

National human rights institutions and continuous education system in human rights sphere have been created in the country and a human rights provision monitoring system has been established. Non-governmental system of human rights provision and civil society institutions are actively developing in the country.

The sides exchanged views on bilateral cooperation in this field, during the meeting.

US State Department representative also held talks with Uzbek Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov. An exchange of views on certain aspects of the Uzbek-American cooperation was carried out during these talks. The two sides discussed a number of topical issues directed towards the further development of bilateral relations.
