Measures to fight radicalization are enshrined in national legislation and international agreements of Uzbekistan.
In the Constitution and normative acts, religious extremism and terrorism are recognized as crimes against peace and humanity, as well as against public security, said Uzbekistan’s Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov at the high-level dialogue “Central Asia-UN” in Ashgabat.
Kamilov noted that the current chairmanship of Uzbekistan in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is held under the slogan “Education and enlightenment – the path to peace and creation”, which was proposed by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in his message to participants of the 43rd session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers, held in Tashkent in October 2016.
He stressed that the important factors in preventing radicalization of population are ensuring the interethnic tolerance, improving people’s well-being and systemic dialogue with the people.
“Our unity is in diversity,” added the minister.
Kamilov said that a mechanism has been established among the Central Asian countries for interaction of law enforcement agencies in countering terrorism and extremism.
He went on to say that Uzbekistan praises the coordinating role of the United Nations and activities of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) in the fight against terrorism and extremism and advocate the early adoption of a comprehensive UN convention on combating international terrorism and the creation of a new anti-terrorism department in the UN.
