Uzbekistan looks to build first pumped storage power plant

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Apr.15

Trend:

The first pumped storage power plant (PSPP) is expected to be built in Uzbekistan, Trend reports via Podrobno.uz, referring to the Uzbekhydroenergo JSC.

Such agreement has been achieved as a result of the negotiations between representatives of the French EDF company and the company’s leadership in Tashkent city.

The negotiation parties also reached preliminary agreements to install floating solar power plants on reservoirs, set up the special working groups and discuss the key organizational issues, as well as signed a memorandum of practical cooperation.

The country's first PSPP with a capacity of 200 MW will be built in the Tashkent region’s Bostanlyk district. The new facility has been named as Khojikent PSPP.

The main purpose of the plant is to generate electricity to cover the evening and morning peaks in consumption and to use excess nighttime energy. During a night power failure, the station receives cheap electricity from the power grid and uses it to pump water into the upper reservoir (pumping mode).

During the morning and evening peaks of energy consumption, the station discharges water from the upper reservoir to the lower ones, while generating expensive peak electricity, which it gives to the grid (generator mode).

The experience of using pumped-storage stations to regulate electrical modes has shown that they are not only a generating source but also a source of providing system services that contribute to both optimizing the daily load schedule and increasing the reliability and quality of the power supply.

EDF is the largest electricity producer in France and the world's largest nuclear power plant operator.
