Latvian cluster partakes in capacity building of engineering companies in Uzbekistan

Latvian Cluster Cleantech Latvia is implementing a grant contract with the European Commission for the implementation of the project “Capacity building of industry associations serving engineering companies in Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Economics of Latvia told Trend.

According to the ministry, Latvia is interested in developing cooperation in areas of common interest for both sides, especially in areas of high value-added.

“Both sides need to continue and intensify work toward the finding and establishing mutually advantageous projects in order to promote trade and economic cooperation,” the ministry said.

Also, the ministry noted that economic cooperation between Uzbekistan and Latvia has been implemented in a number of sectors, including, in agriculture, food processing, chemistry, including pharmacy, machinery and mechanical equipment, transport and logistics, education, as well as in environmental sector including waste management, clean technologies.

In addition, successful cooperation in the education sector was realized. More than 1,300 Uzbek citizens are studying in Latvia. It is noted that Latvian higher education institutions have established their branches in Uzbekistan, and double degree programs have been launched.

Furthermore, Latvian Cluster Cleantech Latvia on behalf of the consortium has started to implement a grant contract with the European Commission for the implementation of the project “Capacity building of industry associations serving engineering companies in Uzbekistan”.

The ministry reports that the project aims to improve the capacity of industry associations to provide versatile and competitive services to engineering companies in Uzbekistan, as well as to introduce engineering certification to ensure high-quality standards in investment projects and develop a presence of micro, small and medium-sized companies in growing industries.

Earlier it was reported that according to the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia, the trade turnover between Latvia and Uzbekistan in 2020 decreased by 20.8 percent compared to the same period last year. It was noted that both exports and imports have declined, and the total trade in 2020 amounted to 89 million euros.

"At present, Uzbekistan is the 37th largest trade partner of Latvia, ranking 31st in exports and 46th in imports," the message said.
