TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, April 17. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) provided assistance on a $1.5 billion project to modernize the heating system of Uzbekistan's Tashkent, Trend reports.

According to ADB, the project aims to lower carbon emissions in Uzbekistan, enhance energy efficiency, decrease water usage and leakage, and improve the quality and dependability of the country's heat supply.

The new system is being deployed as part of the project in the Sergeli and Bektemir districts of Tashkent as a pilot phase in 2022. New boiler plants that use eco-friendly and efficient technology, like closed-loop, pre-insulated pipelines, are taking the place of obsolete networks in Uzbekistan.

When the initiative is fully implemented, it is expected to reduce network heat losses by more than 40 percent, minimize breakdowns, reduce water leakage by more than 60 percent, and reduce electricity consumption by more than 15 percent in the country.

Uzbekistan plans to implement a modernized heating system for the entire city of Tashkent by 2032.

Meanwhile, ADB's current sovereign portfolio in Uzbekistan amounted to $5.06 billion as of January 2024.

The bank’s current sovereign portfolio includes 32 loans, 1 grant, and 1 sovereign guarantee.
