Iran condemns the desecration of the shrine of Hujr ibn Adi by militant groups in Syria.

Hujr ibn Adi is known as a close companion of Prophet Mohammad and a revered Shia figure.

Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has sent separate letters to secretary generals of the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation as well as the Director-General of UNESCO over the issue, the IRNA News Agency reported.

Salehi has called on the international organizations to condemn the inhumane and immoral act.

He has also warned that such sacrilegious moves could trigger sectarian fighting among the followers of religions.

The al-Nusrah group has claimed responsibility for the destruction of the shrine of Hujr ibn Adi and the exhumation of his remains.

They've moved the remains to an unknown location.
