Iran has spent some $1.2 billion (based on official rate of 24,800 rials per each USD) on publishing textbooks for schools during last three years, Ayaronline news portal reported.
According to the report, Iran has published some 130 million textbooks during the current solar year (started on March 21).
The country's annual paper consumption reaches some 660,000 tons, with 50,000 tons of that amount used for publishing school textbooks.
Iran's Education Ministry mainly uses imported papers instead of the domestic ones for publishing textbooks, the report said.
Average price of a textbook in Iran reaches some $0.40. After the end of education year most of textbooks are discarded, and most of the time not used again.
There are approximately 104,114 public and private schools (primary schools, high schools, etc).
Education in Iran is highly centralized and is divided into K-12 education and higher education.
K-12 education is supervised by the Ministry of Education and higher education is under supervision of Ministry of Science, Research and Technology.
