First Vice President: Iranian administration determined to combat corruption

The Iranian administration is determined to combat corruption and rent seeking, the Mehr News Agency quoted First Vice President Es'haq Jahangiri as saying on February 18.

Implementing the second phase of the subsidy reform plan, reducing the inflation rate and getting out of the state of recession will be the administration's main focus, he added.

However, the government is not after shock therapy for the national economy and is pursuing stabilisation of foreign currency rates, he noted.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has urged the Ministry of Intelligence to make every effort to deal with economic corruption, the Fars News Agency reported on Feb. 3.

Referring to unacceptable standards of living in the country, the president added that economic corruption is widespread and confronting it requires comprehensive planning.

It is a vital and emergency task for all and especially for the Ministry of Intelligence to combat economic corruption, he added.

Iran has fallen from 133 to 144 among 177 countries in terms of corruption perceptions compared to last year, according to Transparency International's annual report released on December 3, 2013.

The inflation rate for the 12-month period to the tenth Iranian calendar month of Dey (ended January 22) hit 38 percent, the Central Bank ofIran announced on Feb. 3, Iran's IRNA News Agency reported.

Point-to-point inflation also stood at 28.8 per cent.

However, the Statistical Centre of Iran announced on Jan. 28 that the inflation rate for the 12-month period to the tenth Iranian calendar month of Dey reached 35 percent.

The figure shows a 0.5 percent fall compared to the previous month, the centre reported.
