Officials of Iran's Mazandaran province call for halt of water transfer projects

TEHRAN, Iran, Aug. 30

Representatives of Mazandaran Province have requested the Iranian President to annual the implementation of projects for leak prevention and water transfer from Lar dam to Tehran, Trend reports citing IRNA.

The controversial project is ongoing and necessary permits were obtained for its implementation, following wide speared objections, representatives of Mazandaran Province in the parliament have requested for halt of the project in a letter to new Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi by explaining technical reasons.

The following letter describes technical reasons about the project destructiveness and violation of water right in Mazandaran right.

The letter indicates Mazandaran province has capacity to produce agricultural products that was suffered from water transfer projects that have environmental, social and economic consequences.

Mazandaran MPs noted in their letter that the project would violates UNESCO's five international requirements about water transfer. Ignoring Mazandaran water right and also contradiction in calculations of transferable water from Lar dam to Tehran would have further access to the province's water resources and impose more pressure on ecosystem.

The implementation of water transfer from downstream of Lar dam and Polur region to Tehran would have environmental consequences and effect ecosystem and water resources.
