Iran imports 22 million metric tons of food products, including agricultural and animal farming products, annually.
Iranian MP Bahram Beiranvand said that unfortunately many of famers are selling their farmlands to make ends meet, Iran's ISNA news agency reported on September 16.
If the fertile farmlands are sold this way, our dependence on importing food products will be increased and this will lead to a national disaster, he said.
