By Fatih Karimov - Trend:

Iran imports 95 percent of its needed wood from Russia, Abdolazim Aqajani, Secretary of the Iranian Wood Industries Union, said.

Aqajani said Iran imported one million cubic meters of wood last year, Iran's ISNA news agency reported on November 8.

Despite vast areas of forests in the country, we need to import large amounts of wood annually due to the improper exploitation of woods, he added.

Over 1.87 million cubic meters of wood has been used in the production of paper and other products over the past six months, he noted.

Khodakaram Jalali, director of Iran Forests, Ranges, and Watershed Management Organization said on October 31 that the organization is generally opposed with the exportation of wood.

He added that the Ministry of Agriculture has recently reduced the wood export tariff.

We meet the country's need to wood partly from forests and partly from import sources, he noted.

The Iran Customs Administration has announced that the exportation of wood, except for firewood and charcoal, is allowed.
