The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) is going to form a department of economy, MFA spokesman Bahram Qassemi said during a press conference on Aug 21, reported by Trend correspondent at the event.

He said that, the department’s goals consist of the improved attendance to the needs of the newly-formed priorities, as well as the assistance in the implementation of the 6th Development Plan (economic plan for the years 2017-2022).

The department will start its operations soon, Qassemi noted, adding that its job would be to facilitate the relations with other countries in the economic arena.

Attracting foreign investments, as well as finding workforce overseas, would also be among the objectives of the department, the spokesman stated.

Encouraged by gains from an international nuclear accord with six world powers, Iran’s Foreign Ministry will revamp its current structure to ensure its more effective engagement in economic activities with the international community, local media reported in May.

The move appears to be a more serious bid by Tehran to facilitate an economic rebound at the wake of the nuclear deal, which removed sanctions against Tehran in exchange for restraint of its nuclear program.

Even before the nuclear deal of 2015, Iran had already tasked its embassies abroad with the intensification of their economic role.
