NIDC carries out about 40% of Iran’s directional drilling operations

The National Iranian Drilling Company (NIDC) carried out 44,818 meters of directional and horizontal drilling operations at Iran’s oil and gas fields during the last fiscal year (ended March 20), said Mehran Alipour, head of the Special Operations Bureau at the NIDC.

This length of directional and horizontal drilling is 8 percent more compared to the preceding year and was carried out in 81 holes, Alipour said, the press office of NIDC reported.

The horizontal and directional drilling was used in the activity areas of National Iranian South Oil Company, Iranian Offshore Oil Company, Iranian Central Oil Fields Company and turnkey projects of the NIDC, the official said.

He further said that over 20 companies in Iran are active in special drilling operations, adding that 40 percent of directional and horizontal drilling operations in the country is carried out by NIDC.

Iran uses horizontal and directional drilling for erupting wells, drilling a well with multiple branches and drilling multiple wells via an offshore rig as well as drilling in inaccessible areas such as residential regions and drilling on faults.

The NIDC owns 73 drilling rigs including 70 light, heavy and ultra-heavy onshore and three offshore rigs. The company has also leased a drilling rig.
