As part of the project "Breeding Fish in the Sea", some 200,000 tons of fish are expected to be bred in Iran until the end of the sixth development plan, Deputy Chairman of Iran's Fisheries Organization Seyfullah Hagigi said while getting acquainted with a fishery facility in the Bandar Lengeh County.

Presently, fish breeding facilities are being expanded in Iran's northern, southern and inland waters, he said.

Most commonly bred species in the south are zander and sea bream, while in the north the most popular are salmon and sturgeon.

The numbers of fish and sea animals are dwindling in the Persian Gulf, and Iran's Fisheries Organization intends to develop fish breeding projects in order to eliminate the problem.

The sixth development program is a 5-year program approved by the Iranian parliament in 2016.
