Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has inaugurated the Kani Sib dam in West Azerbaijan province, Trend reports via IRNA.
The dam should play a big role in the project of reviving the Urmia Lake.
"Lives and health of 15 million people in west of the country and agriculture in this region depend on Urmia Lake, and this dam should be of big help in this regard," Rouhani said.
Rouhani said his government has inaugurated 48 dams during its ruling term so far, and aims to bring the figure to 57 dams by the end of its eight years ruling term (June 2021) and the overall number of country's dams would reach 201," he said.
"The revival of the Urmia Lake was one of the government's promises since the lives of a lot of people rely on it, and further damage could lead to migration of people in West Azerbaijan Province and Tabriz due to sand storms," said Rouhani.
The president went on to express hope that the government's efforts would yield results.
"The Urmia Lake revival plan is important to us and engineers have made efforts to launch the Kani Sib dam and other actions that include finishing a 35 kilometers tunnel," he said.
