Iran responds to IAEA resolution

TEHRAN, Iran, June 22

Trend:

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) spokesman has objected to the IAEA Board of Governors resolution saying the agency members should not rely on baseless information.

"The agency has requested access to two locations in Iran based on the documents claimed by Israeli side, but Islamic republic of Iran considers these accusations illegitimate. These requests should be based on legal and transparent IAEA's framework," said Behrouz Kamalvandi, Trend reports citing TASNIM.

"The members of IAEA should not allow political pressures affect IAEA's monitoring approach. Under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), almost 20 percent of IAEA's inspections activity is done in Iran, and everyday, there are seven inspectors in Iran," Kamalvandi said in a statement.

"Any request for access to locations should be reasonable and based on the article 4 of additional protocol that states the IAEA should give the country a chance to clarify any question. In this regard, no chance has not been given to Iran so far; therefore, the questions should be based on additional protocol," he added.

"In general, collecting data via third party could be used for political gains against countries and put their securities at risk, while interrupting IAEA's routine inspections," he said adding that the IAEA Board has adopted a resolution calling on Iran to fully cooperate with the agency in implementing its NPT (Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons) Safeguards Agreement and Additional Protocol and meet the IAEA's requests without further delay.

The resolution follows IAEA Director General's reports in March and June on the agency’s efforts and interactions with Iran to clarify information related to the correctness of Iran’s declarations under its Safeguards Agreement and Additional Protocol.

The resolution stressed the importance of States complying fully with their safeguards obligations and facilitating access as required when notified by IAEA.
