Iranian president Hassan Rouhani met with Pope Francis Jan. 26 at the second day of his historic visit to Europe, the official website of the president reported.
The visit is the first meeting of an Iranian president with leader of the Catholic Christians after 16 years.
The Vatican is expected to release a statement on the meeting later in the day.
President Rouhani arrived in the Vatican City on Jan. 26 morning and was welcomed by German Archbishop Georg Gaenswein.
The Iranian president arrived in Rome on Jan. 25 on the first leg of his trip to three European destinations including Italy, Vatican and France following the implementation of a nuclear agreement between Iran and the six world powers.
Rouhani left Tehran at the head of a high-ranking delegation, which includes government officials, Iranian entrepreneurs and businessmen.
