Kyrgyzstan backs Iran’s joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev said in a joint press conference with Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani in Bishkek.

“Kyrgyzstan’s view of Iran’s intention to join the SCO as a full member is positive and Kyrgyzstan welcomes Iran’s will,” Atambayev said, IRNA news agency reported December 23.

“We believe, regarding Iran’s potential, that the country’s membership can improve the organization’s stance in the world,” he stated.

Iran has currently observer status in the SCO and Iran’s full membership is expected to be put on agenda of the SCO conference.

The SCO is a Eurasian political, economic and military organization which was founded in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
