Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said that his country would have fought with enemies inside the Islamic Republic if threats had not been thwarted in Syria.

He described those who fight against the Syrian government as “ill-wishers and seditionists” saying if they had not been confronted in Syria, the Islamic Republic would have stood against them in the Iranian provinces of Tehran, Fars and Khorasan, the supreme leader’s official website reported Jan. 5.

The leader further described the “ill-wishers and seditionists” fighting against Syrian government as the “puppets of the US”.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei made the remarks at a meeting with a group of relatives of Iranian army servicemen killed in Syria.

The report did not mention the exact date of the meeting but it said the meeting was held over this week.

During the meeting, the Iranian supreme leader paid tribute to the memory of those who lost their lives in the Syrian conflict.

Iranian army last April announced that it had deployed a group of its commandos to Syria to assist President Bashar al-Assad's forces in fight against terrorist groups.

Over the past years and since the crisis broke out in Syria several Iranian nationals have been reportedly killed in clashes with "terrorists" there.
