AIDS transmission through sex doubles in Iran

The number of Iranians infected with HIV through sexual intercourse has doubled over the past decade, says a senior Iranian health official.

Ali Akbar Sayyari, deputy health minister, said the number of those Iranians who contracted the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) through sexual intercourse reached 30 percent, IRNA news agency reported July 14.

Early this year, Iran’s Health Ministry announced that 31,000 individuals in Iran suffered from AIDS.

According to Iranian Health Ministry, 85 percent of the HIV infected patients in the country are men.
