а) Oil and gas production

Roughly 16 million tons of oil and condensate was extracted in Azerbaijan in January-April. This index 0.9 percent more than index of oil and condensate production in January-April 2008, the Azerbaijani state statistics committee said.

Major volume of oil production fell on the Azerbaijani International Operating Company in January-April. The company extracted 13.1 million tons of oil and gas condensate in the block of offshore fields "Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli" and gas condensate field "Shakh Deniz" compared to 12.9 million tons per the similar period of 2008.

Gas production hit 8 billion cubic meters in Azerbaijan in January-April that an increase of 0.9 percent than in 2008. Roughly 4 billion cubic meters of gas fell on "Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli" (casing-head gas) and "Shah Deniz" compared to 3 billion cubic meters in 2008.

b) Oil refinery

In January-April 2009, the total volume of oil refining at Azeri oil refineries, which is owned by the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijani Republic (SOCAR), was just 2 million tons, compared to 2.5 million tons in 2008.

Oil products are manufactured at two oil refining plants in Baku with a total capacity of 20 million tons of oil per year. Both plants are owned by Socar, which manufactures roughly 6 million tons of oil per day from offshore and onshore fields.

v) Realization

The State Statistics Committee reported that approximately 1.1 million tons of oil products were sold to the internal market of Azerbaijan in January-April 2009, compared to 1.7 million tons in January-April 2008.

Some 293,200 tons of the total volume of oil products was petrol, which is an increase of 14.4 percent from the same period in 2008. The wholesale price for one ton of А-92 gasoline in the internal market (VAT and transportation costs inclusive) is 670 manats and А-95 - 736 manats. Azpetrol received 153,000 tons of gasoline and LUKoil - 49,000 tons.

In January-April 2009, 219,500 tons of diesel fuel was sold to the domestic market, which is by 22.6 percent less compared to the same period in 2008. The wholesale cost of 1 ton of diesel fuel (VAT and transportation costs inclusive) is 485 manats. Azpetrol received 79,200 tons of diesel fuel and LUKoil - roughly 26,340 tons, the state committee reported. The Azerbaijani State Caspian Sea Shipping Company purchased 6,000 tons of diesel fuel.

Most of all, fuel oil was sold on the domestic market. Over the first four months of 2009, 170,200 tons of fuel oil was sold to the domestic market, which is 73.7 percent less than the figure in 2008. The wholesale price of 1 ton of М-40 fuel oil in Azerbaijan is 100 manats (including delivery and VAT). Azerenerji JSC received 118,120 tons of fuel oil and the Heydar Aliyev Oil Refinery Plant 32,200 tons for further refinery.

A total of 105,300 tons of aviation kerosene was sold in this period, 36.5 percent less than in 2008. The price of aviation kerosene is 307 manats per ton (including delivery and VAT).

The sale of petroleum bitumen totaled 56,200 tons, an increase of 56.5 times from 2008. The wholesale price of 1 ton of bitumen BN 60/90 (VAT and transportation costs inclusive) is 160 manats.

In January-April 2009, some 31,200 tons of butane-propane gas (LPG) was sold, 12.6 percent more compared to 2008. The other more than 235,500 tons of oil products were also sold, less by 21.7 percent than in January-April 2008.

2. Chemical complex

In Jan.-Apr. Azerkimya state-owned company (production of chemical products) produced 3.7 million cubic meters of nitrogen which is 3.7 percent less than the figure of the same period of 2008, Azerbaijan State Statistics Committee said.

The production of polyethylene, isopropyl alcohol and paintwork materials shrank in Jan.-Apr. Chlorine oxide was not produced during in Jan.-Apr.

3. Power engineering

In January-April 2009, the Azerenergy (the largest energy producer in Azerbaijan) produced over 7.5 billion KWt/h of energy, compared to 7.9 billion in the same period of 2008.

Out of the total volume of produced energy, 6.9 billion KWt/h accounted to thermoelectric power station and 0.6 billion for hydroelectric power station.

In April, Azerenergy produced about 1.6 billion KWt/h of energy, out of which 1.5 billion was produced in thermoelectric power station and 0.1 billion in hydroelectric power station.
